“Who are you?” is the question you would think people ask us when they meet us. Instead, they say in a nice, but curious way, “so…exactly… what are you?” The short answer is that I am French, Spanish, Italian, married to a French Vietnamese, living in the United States. Basically, our family embodies the word multicultural. Spend one day with us, and you would constantly be shifted from language to language, plus a mix of all of the above! What do we call that? Spanglish? Franglish? Spanfran? Vietglish? A nice potpourri of languages. Ahhh… If only the French literal translation of “potpourri” didn’t mean “rotten pot,” it could have been a good name to reflect the mix of languages that happens in our daily life.
Some people live to eat, we live to travel. We can never get enough of that wonderful sweet, yet unnerving feeling of entering a different culture, facing different sounds, different smells, different customs, different energies. For us, entering a country is like entering someone’s home. We appreciate the invitation, we feel the urge to understand, to adapt, and sometimes it happens the second we arrive, sometimes it takes great effort. In any case, we feel grateful to be part of the world, and we feel immense respect for the people who live in it.
This site is a reflection of who we are. It combines traveling with speaking different languages. We hope the stories will take you on a journey, and get you ready for your next vacation! Bon voyage!
